Geography of Zagreb
Zagreb is situated in Central Europe, in the south-western part of the Carpathian Basin, on the slopes of Medvednica Mountain, along the banks of the Sava River. The surrounding hills and forests offer good possibilities of recreation. The highest peak of Medvednica, Sljeme, reaches 1032 m. The park is accessible by cablecar or on foot by marked trails, about two hours to the top, or you can reach it by car or bus from Zagreb. The cave of Veternica attracts many visitors, it's one of the greatest caves in Croatia. During winter Sljeme is the favourite destination of skiers and other lovers of winter sports.
The World Heritage site Plitvice Lakes is in reach of Zagreb by car or bus, the travel takes about 2 hours by car, 2,5-3 hours by bus. The national park, famous for the small interconnected lakes with waterfalls, offers special vehicles for visitors, panoramic trains, electric ships.
The picturesque castles surrounding Zagreb are worth a visit, if you stay for more than a couple days. Trakoscan is maybe the most romantic and beautiful, the Romanic neo-Gothic Marusevac , the ancient Veliki Tabor and Miljana are all well preserved monuments. |
